Weerd mentions coming home in an AMC Pacer…
Which got me a thinking…About cars..
I probably came home in a ’49 Ford Pickup truck…quite possibly..
Or they just lugged my carcass out of the hospital, across the street to Grandma’s house…
But Dad was a Rambler / AMC owner once we ‘settled’ in the town I grew up, graduated and got married in. Before the Gypsy in me kicked in and I moved my bride and children around for a few years before settling where I am now.
I remember a ’62 Rambler, yes a push button transmission Rambler, blue in color..
We also had a ‘62 Chevy that he bought new, which was a big deal then. Not sure what when he got rid off the Rambler, but when we trekked from SW Minn to SE Minn it was in the ’62 Chevy and a ’55 Chevy.
He then really started his Rambler / AMC years..
A 1967 AMC Ambassador wagon.
Followed by a ’69 AMC Javelin..
Short break after he turned in front of a New Yorker on the way home from work one night.
We had a ’67 Chevy Impala with a 327 4 barrel carb in it…at the same time I started driving!! WTH was he thinking..??
Followed by a ’74 Hornet AMC, yep heh….Picked my GFs in HS up with that thing many times!!
Then he bought a, yep one of the worst cars ever conceived…
An AMC Gremlin..a ’76 I believe…I do not remember that car being around very long before he bought a Datsun…
I was not immune to this bizarre behavior as I always thought the Javelin was way cool and was upset I never got to drive it as he totaled it right before I began driving…
So what did I do? Remember Mark Donohue? Oh yeah!!!
I bought a ‘74 Javelin. Purple in color and it soon became a purple lemon…I put chromed rims, big wide tires on it…Craig 8 track, Jensen coaxial speakers with ‘custom’ built cabinets and I learned more about exhaust systems and wrenching on that car then I ever care to learn again!!
Was happy the day I sold it!!!
After that it was not over until the late ’80s when AMC became Jeep/Eagle. After Chrysler took it over.
Dad bought an Eagle Medallion. Which he drove the heck out of and I?
And I? Not sure this counts, but since it was Jeep/Eagle I bought a 1988 Jeep Comanche Pickup truck..
It rocked…one fast truck and it served me well, until I got married, MBWITW got pregnant and announced we needed a ‘functional’ vehicle in which to transport 3…sigh…
Somewhere in there the MBWITW and I purchased our own Eagle Medallion. Station wagon style…which served us well until one day at 70 mph the engine took a crap on me…
So Rambler/AMC/Jeep/Eagle….a bit of history in the past for me and mine…
Dad’s first car was a VW Beetle. He upgraded to a Super Beetle, then it was the Pacer, the Pacer begot an AMC Concord, then it took a turn for the mundane with some sort of Nissan hatch-back (around the same time Dad got his first Ranger and ruined me for life…strange wonder given that it was an I-4 RWD in a hideous powder blue)
And it hasn’t got any more exciting since. Neither has my own cars. Maybe I’ll change that some day.
I remember my Dad test driving a Beetle…Then bought a Javelin…
