Paymar stated in an interview today that he intends to bring gun registration (aka Universal Background Checks) directly to the House floor for a vote.

Here’s the quote in the Star Tribune today:
“On Wednesday he said, ‘The agreement we had with the Speaker is that Rep. Hilstrom would agree to the gun show loophole language, and that the Speaker would allow a vote on the House floor.’ But once that more limited bill reaches the floor, Paymar said, an amendment will likely be offered to re-insert universal background checks.”

This morning in the state House Public Safety Committee, anti-gun Representative Michael Paymar’s (DFL-64B) gun control package, House File 237, stalled for lack of support.  The Committee vote that was originally scheduled for this morning has now been rescheduled for this evening at 7:00 pm, providing the anti-gun forces more time to ram this unpopular infringement on our rights through the legislative process.

As previously reported, the Paymar gun control laundry-list would be an unprecedented infringement on our constitutional right to bear arms.  Your efforts are working!  Please keep contacting members of this Committee and continue to urge them to OPPOSE this intrusive violation of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

“Punish Gun Owners Act” hearing moved to 7 p.m. tonight

A hearing on the rights-violating gun control bill, HF237, has been delayed until 7 p.m. tonight.

Rep. Paymar’s Rights-Violating HF237

Universal Registration:

This bill would require universal registration of pistols and sporting rifles, implemented through a “universal” background check, — twice: Every sale of these guns would have to go through a licensed dealer, who would charge you $25 per transfer. These transfers would still require a permit to purchase, for which the House bill would charge you another $25 annually.

Rights Delayed

HF237 would extend the time that sheriffs and police have to process a purchase permit from five to seven business days, and allow the law enforcement official to fingerprint the applicant and extend the deadline to 30 days. Whenever he feels like it.

Rights Denied

Easier Carry Permit Denials
This bad bill would allow sheriffs the judgement to deny a carry permit on the basis of a subjective “likelihood” that the applicant was dangerous.
More Difficult Carry Permit Appeals
Rep. Paymar’s mean-spirited bill outright encourages abusive denials: it removes the sheriffs’ obligation to pay an applicant’s legal fees when a permit denial is overturned — a safeguard that has kept sheriffs departments honest, and bogus denials fairly low, for almost 10 years.  The Sheriff’s Association has not asked for this unfair reversal of law.
The bill also lowers the sheriffs’ standard of proof of danger to self or other others from “clear and convincing evidence” to the mere “preponderance of the evidence.” Violating your rights should get harder, not easier!
Due Process Protections Gutted
HF237 would remove legal protections against losing your firearm rights. Currently, before you lose your right to own a firearm, you must be convicted or committed by a court. Under the new bill, any involuntary hospitalization, even overnight, would disqualify you from owning guns indefinitely.
Making The Law Abiding Into Convicts
The bill would set a new, very low standard of proof for conviction of serious gun crimes, using the phrase “knows or has reason to believe” to convict sellers who reports a gun stolen, or who sell a gun to a person who later commits a crime.

More Difficult Civil Rights Restoration
The bad bill increases the difficulty and expense for a person who has paid their debt to society to regain their civil rights.

Senator Latz’s committee assistant sent us a notification last night that the hearing would be at noon. Today, the committee schedule was updated to show that the hearing was at 6 p.m. Strangely enough, the anti-gun Facebook page had the 6 p.m. time listed hours before the committee page was updated. Don’t you wonder how we got sent the wrong info, and they got the right info?

A pile of anti-rights legislation will be heard by the a Minnesota Senate committee on Thursday at noon.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, headed by Sen. Rob Latz, will hear the bill, which he authored, and which is likely to closely match Rep. Michael Paymar‘s rights-stripping HF237.

The committee is heavily weighted toward urban, anti-freedom urban DFLers, who need to hear from you that real Minnesotans DO NOT support these policies. Their contact information is below.

If you are free on Thursday, it is important that we have plenty of gun rights supporters, but this will not be the last, or even the most important, event at the capitol in the coming days and weeks. If you have to save your days off, there will be more winnable battles.

Please continue to write and call your own senator an representative, with three simple messages:

  • I am your constituent
  • I oppose Rep. Paymar’s HF237 and its Senate companion
  • I support Rep. Hilstrom’s HF1325 and its Senate companion

MN Senate gun control hearings next week: WE NEED YOU THERE!

It’s time to let your voice be heard at the Minnesota Capitol!

We need you to once again show the Minnesota Legislature that real Minnesotans oppose infringements on Second Amendment rights!

Senate Judiciary Committee chair Ron Latz, a consistent voice against gun rights, has scheduled three hearings next week to discuss the numerous gun control bills introduced this session. They hearing times are:

  • Thursday, Feb. 21, Noon to 2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 21, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 22, Noon to 6:00 p.m.

While Senator Latz delayed public announcement of these hearings until Wednesday night, he apparently tipped off anti-rights groups early Wednesday morning!

We don’t know yet which bills will be heard when, but there are plenty of bad bills to go around.

We will watch the committee schedule for any last minute changes.
