Today the Senate officially commences their debate on S. 649, Harry Reid‘s “Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act.”
The first amendment to be considered is sponsored by Senators Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) and would create “universal background checks.”
The good news is this: support is waning!
Last week a total of sixteen Republicans crossed the aisle and voted with Democrats on “the motion to proceed” on this bill; however, of those sixteen Republicans several said they are planning on joining their conservative colleagues in voting against the Toomey-Manchin amendment.
Remember, last week thirty-one Senators – twenty-nine Republicans joined by two pro-gun Democrats – voted against bringing this bill to debate. This said, we know these thirty-one are already on our side.
Added to these, nine more have voiced their firm opposition against the amendment, bumping up the number of opponents to forty – just one short of killing it.
We must make sure that we rally our elected servants today and force them to tip the scales on this amendment. While it is only the first of several bad amendments, we must make sure that we let them know that we are opposed to universal background checks!

Senators Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) amendment mandating universal background checks had been touted as the great bipartisan compromise.
The amendment’s sponsors argue that requiring more background checks is “common sense” and in line with the Second Amendment. And the fact that both sponsors still have A-ratings with the NRA gives the gun-grabbers that much more to celebrate – it gives their cause a type of false legitimacy.
The reality is, however, that the Toomey-Manchin amendment is nothing new. It is a near-carbon copy of Sen. Chuck Schumer’s universal background check bill and sources say that the New York Senator was likely involved in creating it. Further, while the amendment’s sponsors can brag about their A-rating with the NRA, some of their co-sponsors hold F-ratings with the same group.
Expanding background checks is an avenue for gun-control, plain and simple, which is why gun-grabbers of both colors are supporting it.

The Toomey-Manchin amendment fulfills more than Obama’s wish of “closing the gun show loopholes” – it mandates that all gun-purchases, except those that are strictly word of mouth accompanied by no formal advertising, must be accompanied by a criminal background check.
Under current law, all gun stores – be they a local shop or a large chain – are required to run an instant criminal background check for all gun purchases; however, sales through the internet, a classified ad, or a gun show don’t require them. Should the Toomey-Manchin amendment pass all of these would be subject to background checks making it even more difficult for law-abiding citizens to sell and purchase weapons apart from government surveillance.
What’s worse is that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NCIS) is flawed and in many cases prevents law-abiding citizens from buying weapons. For example, if a buyer’s name is the same or similar to someone who has been convicted of a crime, that person is barred from purchasing a weapon. Further – and this is absolutely disgusting – the NCIS declares over one-hundred thousand veterans as criminals and prevents them from legally purchasing a weapon. That’s right; United States veterans – those who were willing to die defending the Constitution and its Second Amendment – are prevented from bearing arms at home.
For these individuals, gun shows and internet sales allow them to legally obtain the weapons that they otherwise would be wrongfully debarred from getting. Should internet and gun show sales be more greatly restricted through the flawed NCIS less people will be gun-owners – whether or not they deserve to be or not.
Senators must join with Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and their other colleagues and completely oppose the establishment of a universal background check!

Congress creating a “universal background check” will not prevent violent aggressors from endangering society. There is always a “black market” for weapons as gun-running is one of the oldest of trades. The only difference is this: those who respect the law generally conscientiously object to securing their rights through the black market, while criminals could care less. In short, “bad guys” always get guns.
It has already been shown that killers like Adam Lanza wouldn’t have been stopped by a background check. This is still the case. Background checks do not reduce crime, they simply create a false sense of security – security that not only infringes upon law-abiding citizens’ rights, but is ultimately doomed to fail… and then what will gun-grabbers pass in the name of safety? Will they press for a national gun-registry? Will they outlaw guns altogether?
Pressing for universal background checks is not what lawmakers should be doing. Principled men and women in Congress must rise up and fight this outright assault on our God-given freedom.

Expanding background checks is not the only amendment that will be offered to the Reid Bill. Senator Dianne Feinstein author of the 1994 assault weapons ban will be offering amendments to “fill the tree” as well.
The Feinstein Amendments will accomplish largely what her Assault Weapons Ban legislation would’ve: ban over 150 gun models, ban all weapons with a pistol grip, and outlaw clips that hold over ten rounds.
The Reid Bill itself, without amendment, appropriates money that the government doesn’t have to funnel into “school safety” programs, despite the fact that the federal government has purposely made schools less safe by requiring that they advertise themselves as “gun free” to violent criminals.
Congressional gun-grabbers, as usual, are clamoring to “do something” – anything – in response to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. The problem is that they are exploiting a tragedy to pass legislation to further erode gun-rights, defense, genuine safety, and the Constitution.
