“After a Golf weekend in Florida avoiding the press, President Barack Obama returned to the White House Monday night, where he faced screaming reporters trying to hold him accountable by asking, in unison, ‘Did you beat Tiger?’ According to the White House pool report, Obama returned to the White House at 8:10 p.m. on Marine One. As he exited the helicopter on the South Lawn and made his way towards the South Portico, a group of reporters demanded to know whether the president vanquished golfing legend Tiger Woods, his Sunday golf companion.”

That the reporters awaiting the president asked the same question in unison suggests they had to collaborate to come up with that stunner.

Despite its newspeak name, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will neither make healthcare more affordable nor protect patients. Make no mistake about it … government medicine will serve a government agenda. The Congressional Budget Office has already published the alarming numbers showing how health care costs will skyrocket under this legislation. But what’s worse is that Obamacare will do nothing to protect you as a patient.

It’s right there in black and white, in Section 1311(h). You know, one of those sections Nancy Pelosi warned us about when she said we’d have to “pass it to know what’s in it.” Section 1311(h) empowers a single bureaucrat with no medical training – the Secretary of Health and Human Services – to “standardize” the services your doctors can and cannot offer you. The real goal of this stealth clause? To reduce health care consumption, period.

This means that even if you’re covered by a private insurer, and even if the treatment your doctor is proposing is perfectly legal, the government can still tell your doctor he’s not allowed to give you that particular treatment. And if your doctor decides to do so anyway, the government can shut down the practice entirely.

With legislation like this, it’s easy to see why now more than ever before, it’s vital to make every effort to be as self-reliant as possible when it comes to your health.

Even as the fog receded in most parts of Uttar Pradesh Monday, 26 people have died in the last 24 hours because of the extreme cold, officials said. The deaths were reported from Basti (6), Jaunpur (4), Ballia (4), Mirzapur (2), Varanasi, Bhadohi and Chandauli (1 each). Dense fog has also caused road accidents, in which as many as six have died. With mercury falling below 11 degrees Celsius in the day, and with minimum temperature falling below four degrees Celsius, the district magistrate of Lucknow has ordered closure of all schools and colleges in the state capital till January 5. Timings for class 11 and 12 have also been revised, and schools are set to open at 10 a.m. Met director J.P. Gupta said conditions would not improve in the coming week. Fog and bitter cold would continue in most parts of the state. Fog also disrupted train schedules, and more than 50 trains were running late Monday morning. All major trains from the union capital Delhi to Lucknow were running late by several hours. The Shatabdi Express was running late by five hours, while the Lucknow Mail was running late by three hours, officials said. (Average journey time by Shatabdi is six hours, 22 minutes.) Long-distance trains were running late by several hours and the Barauni Express had to be cancelled by the Northern Railways. Four flights were cancelled Sunday evening as the visibility at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Amausi airport did not improve. Many flight passengers hoped that the weather would improve, but were in for disappointment as major flyers like Jet Airways and Indigo said they would not be able to fly the late evening flights due to poor visibility.

China's National Meteorological Center(NMC) on Saturday kept its blue alert for the severe cold wave that is sweaping many northern China regions. The observatory said temperature drop will continue to decline from the weekend to Monday after many parts of China had started to experience the lowest temperatures this winter. Most parts of China, except the central and southwestern regions, will see temperature fall by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in the next three days, with some parts of north and northeast China to witness a drop of 10 to 14 degrees Celsius, according to the NMC. On Saturday morning, temperatures in parts of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet, Gansu, Shanxi, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Fujian and Guangxi dropped by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius from a day ago, and by 12 to 16 degrees Celsius in parts of Liaoning and Jilin. China's meteorological disaster alerts are categorized as blue, yellow, orange and red as the severity of disasters ascends. The NMC also forecasted small to moderate snow for parts of Xinjiang, Gansu, Inner Mongolia and Hebei while heavy snow for Shandong Province on Saturday. Parts of south China and Guizhou Province will see sleet, while freezing rain will fall on west and central Guizhou.

Stormy weather caused damage all over Israel on Thursday. Snow fell for hours on Mt. Hermon, beginning in the early morning, where the ski slopes have been closed due to heavy fog and slippery conditions on the road leading up to the site. Highway 75 between Ha'amakim Junction and Kiryat Tivon was closed for several hours due to a fallen electric pole. A tree fell on a parked car in South Tel Aviv. No one was injured in the incident. On Hannah Szenes Street in Givatayim, two electric poles were damaged when a tree fell into a private courtyard. No casualties or property damage were reported in the incident. Municipal workers have removed the tree, and Israel Electric Corp. workers on the scene are dealing with high-voltage wires. Trees went down in other parts of the Tel Aviv suburb, without casualties or property damage. Shaul Ohana, manager of the Hermon ski site, said that snow had not accumulated in the area because the temperature, at 2 degrees Celsius, was too high. He said he hoped the site would be open to visitors by next Tuesday, after the storm had passed. Haifa's municipal emergency center said that numerous calls were received about weather damage from local residents. There were more than 20 reports of trees that had fallen, or were about to fall, in various parts of the city. Traffic lights failed at four intersections and there were blackouts experienced at several locations.

The Meteo-Tech forecasting service predicts continued heavy rain on Thursday and Friday in northern and central Israel and scattered rainfall in the south. Temperatures will be 4-7 degrees (Celsius) lower than Wednesday, and strong winds of 50 kph, gusting up to 80 kph, will cause sandstorms and haze in the south. According to the forecast, strong winds in the evening will cause waves of up to 7 meters in the Mediterranean, at distances of up to several kilometers from the shore. The Israel Meteorological Service predicts the sea-level to rise to up to 9 meters. The rain will reach its peak overnight and in the early hours of Friday morning, with snow continuing to fall on Mt. Hermon. Winds will diminish but remain strong, temperatures will remain low, and there is the danger of flooding along the coastline. Rainfall will decrease on Saturday, and Sunday is expected to see a break in the stormy weather. But the storm, accompanied by heavy rains, is expected to return on Sunday night and Monday. Accumulated rainfall is expected to reach 100 mm in several areas. Forecasts also predict that there will be 118 mm of rainfall at Kfar Giladi in the Upper Galilee, 113 mm in Haifa, 80 mm in Tel Aviv and 53 mm in Jerusalem. The source of the stormy weather is a cold air mass coming from Turkey. The clash between the cold air in the atmosphere and the still warm Mediterranean water (21 degrees) creates unstable weather conditions expressed in large quantities of rainclouds and strong winds.

In Canada…

High winds played havoc with ferry service between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island Wednesday, while snow in the Vancouver region caused traffic headaches for commuters. The winds forced BC Ferries to cancel all morning sailings between the mainland and Victoria and Nanaimo, with service not expected to resume until the mid-afternoon. Sailings were also cancelled to the Gulf Islands, east of Victoria. The storm, the second to hit Metro Vancouver in as many days, brought as much as 20 centimetres of snow to the higher elevations and slowed the morning commute. The snow also forced the closure of the main campus of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, along with all campuses of Douglas College, while many elementary and high schools in the region were also closed. The storm followed just 24 hours after a similar blizzard hit the region, snarling traffic from the early morning to the noon hour on Tuesday.

One of the defining distinctions of Chick-fil-A is that the restaurants are not open on Sundays. From the time Truett Cathy, the company’s founder, started in the restaurant business in 1946, he believed that God wanted him to honor the Sabbath by keeping the stores closed on Sundays. Though the Biblical sabbath is Friday sundown to saturday sundown, most Christians today celebrate Sunday as a day of worship and as “Sabbath”. Although he was challenged on this idea many times by shopping mall operators, Truett always held that “we will have more sales in six days than those who are open for seven.” This has proven to be true, and today it is no longer an issue to fulfill the malls’ requirement to remain open on Sunday.”
