    Isn’t that the stuff that makes fireflys butts glow??

      Yep. But it has a lot of uses. In biology, the gene for luciferase can be attached to other genes, so when the gene is transcripted in the cell, it glows. You can measure the amount of glow and from that, estimate how much gene product is made. It can also be attached to various biological substrates so that when it’s used or it gets concentrated, it glows. There are experiments where it’s used to track neuron activity by looking at where a mouse’s head glows.
