GOA: Gun Owners Score Big in the Senate

Gun Owners Score Big in the Senate
Sell-out amendment falls three votes short of Schumer’s goal of 70
Sometimes victory is relative.  But that doesn’t make it any less definitive.

Today, beginning at 5:30 pm (EST), only 67 Senators — three short of Chuck Schumer’s 70-vote target — voted to shut off debate on the anti-gun HoevenCorker-Leahy amnesty amendment. It is noteworthy that only 15 Republicans voted for cloture (to end debate), while an overwhelming majority of GOP Senators voted against it (that is, most Republicans wanted to keep the filibuster in place).

The Chuck Schumers of the world did everything in their power to get the 70-vote threshold which they had predicted — and which became a floor for the number of votes necessary in order for anti-gunners to avoid embarrassment.

They gave Nevada Senators an unending open-ended sky’s-the-limit program to tout tourism in Las Vegas.

They gave Vermont Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders $1.5 billion in social spending in order to buy his vote.

And so it went.  One Senator after another after another secured irrelevant buy-out amendments as the price for selling out. It was ObamaCare 2.0.

But that wasn’t enough.

By falling short of their 70-vote goal, Schumer & Co. in effect admitted that the bill would limp out of the Senate without any momentum going into the House.  Coupled with our successful efforts to revitalize the Hastert Rule in the House, anti-gun immigration reform is on track to being dead for the year because House Speaker Boehner has said he will not pass it with largely Democratic support.

Does that mean we can declare victory and go home?  No.  As usual, you don’t pop the cork until they bang the gavel. You keep fighting.
And to that end, gun owners should express their dissatisfaction with Senators who voted for the amendment.  You can go here to see how your Senators voted.
As sweet as the 67-27 vote was, it means that our job is not over.

Schumer was unable to break through his 70-vote target because he was so intent upon slamming this bill down our throats that he scheduled his vote when many of his supporters could not make it. If we REALLY want to continue raining on Schumer’s parade, we’re going to have to repeat our achievement on Wednesday, when the Senate votes on cloture on the substitute which contains the sell-out provisions — and on cloture on the whole bill itself.

This means we need to flip a couple of votes, and Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) — both of whom both voted for the sell-out — are the most obvious potential pick-ups.
ACTION: Please click here to contact your Senators and thank those who voted correctly (that is, who voted NAY) on the Hoeven amendment.  But reprimand those who voted wrong (by voting YEA).  Please note that the system will automatically select the correct letter for each of your Senators.
And if you have time to phone in your message, that would be helpful, as well.  The Capitol Switchboard number is 202-224-3121.

GOA Alert!: Senators may resurrect defeated gun control

Senators may resurrect defeated gun control
after making cosmetic changes

“A source close to the Senate negotiations [says] that two senators who voted against the background check bill would vote for it after minor, superficial changes.” — Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC, May 6, 2013

ACTION: Senators who voted pro-gun last month are under intense pressure by Senate Democrats and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s hit ads to switch their votes.  We need to keep applying the heat and let them know that gun owners are ready to help in any Senate campaign, no matter which state, to defeat ANY SENATOR who votes for gun control.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM WASHINGTON, DC. It’s not over yet.  We can’t give up.

We won a dramatic victory last month.  But the Left has not raised the white flag yet, and they are using out-of-state rabble rousers to harass Senators who voted against the Toomey-Schumer-Manchin national gun registry just a couple of weeks ago.

It is a national gun registry because the Obama administration is copying the names of gun purchasers from 4473’s when it conducts its annual inspections of gun shops.  If everyone has to have a 4473 when they buy a gun — even through most private sales — then everyone will be in the Obama administration’s database.

Few things are more hypocritical than the spectacle of gun-grabbers whining that they don’t support national gun registries just as they get off Air Force One on a trip from Hartford, Connecticut where they cheered the enactment of a state gun registry.

THE BULLYING IS CONTINUING. Senate Democrats are bullying the Senators who voted correctly on Toomey-Manchin-Schumer.  Those who are under the most pressure to switch their votes are:

Alaska
Mark Begich        (202) 224-3004
Lisa Murkowski     (202) 224-6665

Arizona
Jeff Flake         (202) 224-4521

Georgia
Saxby Chambliss    (202) 224-3521
Johnny Isakson     (202) 224-3643

Montana
Max Baucus         (202) 224-2651

North Dakota
Heidi Heitkamp     (202) 224-2043

New Hampshire
Kelly Ayotte      (202) 224-3324

Nevada
Dean Heller        (202) 224-6244

Ohio
Rob Portman        (202) 224-3353

Tennessee
Lamar Alexander    (202) 224-4944
Bob Corker         (202) 224-3344

If your Senator is a Republican, or is mentioned in the list above, it is imperative that you contact them again!

Right now, there are several Public Policy Polling surveys that claim Senators who voted pro-gun have lost public support.  It’s hogwash!

Gun owners can click here to read GOA’s analysis of why these PPP polls are fiction.  These polls are nothing more than a ploy to sway weak-knee Senators into reversing their votes.

Some Senators are even beginning to wonder if they are going to be punished at the polls for voting pro-gun.  And that’s why we need you right now to stay active and engaged in this fight.

CONTACT INFO:  Contact your Senators, if possible, at 202-224-3121.  Jam their phone lines. If it is not possible for you to call, then use the prewritten letter we have provided to e-mail them.

Tell them to vote against the expansion of background checks as they will allow for the registration of gun owners. And let them know that gun owners are ready to help in any Senate campaign, no matter which state, to defeat ANY SENATOR who votes for gun control.

Selling Out! Bagpipes and DHS? Rain Tax? MDs and Guns? Rights? What It Is! Debt Bill!

“Laws are made for men of ordinary understanding and should, therefore, be construed by the ordinary rules of common sense. Their meaning is not to be sought for in metaphysical subtleties which may make anything mean everything or nothing at pleasure.”

Selling Out on Guns

Two senators have brokered a Faustian bargain on gun purchaser background checks that they hope will allow the Democrats’ anti-gun legislation to pass the Senate.

Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), both of whom have “A” ratings with the National Rifle Association, have assigned the creepy Orwellian name, the “Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act,” to their legislation.

What’s in It: Obama’s Gun Control Package

  • Require criminal background checks for all gun sales, including sales by private sellers
  • Reinstate the ban on assault weapons
  • Limit ammo magazines to 10 rounds
  • Ban armor-piercing bullets, except for military and law enforcement
  • Toughen criminal penalties for “straw purchasers,” who are people who go through background check to buy a gun for someone else
  • Spend $4 billion to subsidize 15,000 police officers
  • Train more police officers, first responders and school officials on how to respond to active shooter attacks
  • Spend $30 million for schools to develop emergency response plans
  • Expand mental health programs for young people
  • Confirm President Obama’s nominee for ATF Director
  • Direct the ATF to disregard regulation that allows for importation of weapons more than 50 years old
  • Spend $20 million to track violent deaths across the nation

Another Obama Nominee Confirmed to the Bench

Another Obama Nominee Confirmed to the Bench

Dear Friend of the Second Amendment,

Last week, we alerted you to a radical anti-gun nominee President Obama named to the federal bench, Jesse Furman.

To no one’s surprise, Furman is cut from the same judicial cloth as other Obama nominees such as Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

For instance, in an article published a number of years ago—but from which Furman has not distanced himself—he writes that: “Probably the best explanation for the amount of violent crime in the United States is its fascination with guns.”

GOA members flooded the Senate with emails, and many Senators voted against Furman. But Majority Leader Harry Reid kept every single Democrat in lock-step with the Obama agenda, and Furman was confirmed to a lifetime appointment to the bench on a vote of 62-34.

Republicans Jon Kyl and John McCain (AZ), Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander (TN), Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe (ME), Jeff Sessions (AL), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Scott Brown (MA), and Lindsey Graham (SC) joined all Democrats in voting for Furman.

This vote serves to highlight the difficulty in protecting the courts from anti-Second Amendment nominees who come before the Congress. Obama will continue to nominate far left gun grabbers, and Harry Reid will be his go-to guy for confirmation votes.

And if Obama wins a second term, his agenda will become only more brazen. That’s why a top goal of GOA in 2012 is to help elect as many truly pro-gun friends as we can to the U.S. Senate.

It is crucial that Harry Reid does not retain the gavel next year. But it is not enough to just elect members of the opposing party. We need to elect strong candidates who understand the Constitution and who will not bow to pressure from the White House—whoever the occupant may be—or from the leadership of either party in the Congress.

Thank you for standing with GOA as we fight these battles on a daily basis.

Sincerely,

Tim Macy
Vice Chairman
