Anti-gun Lobby Trying to Silence GOA!

Anti-gun Lobby Trying to Silence GOA!

Dear Friend of the Second Amendment:

We’re under attack.

A desperate anti-gun lobby is trying to silence Gun Owners of America — and your voice, too — in federal elections.

Last month, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence attacked a pro-gun candidate in West Virginia, demanding he return money donated by GOA’s political fund.

Now they’re insisting the same of a congressional candidate in California.

I’m going to show you the email sent by Josh Horowitz, the Director of the Coalition to Stop Violence, but first let me set the stage.

The hysteria all started when Rolling Stone magazine published a hit piece on GOA’s Executive Director, Larry Pratt, who had the temerity to state a historical fact: that the Second Amendment is not about hunting or sporting, but ultimately about resisting tyranny.

The article was seized upon by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat from New York City, who called the Capitol Police and the U.S. House Sergeant-at-Arms, claiming that Mr. Pratt was “threatening” lawmakers (seriously, you can’t make this stuff up!)

Not surprisingly, the Capitol Police and Sergeant-at-Arms recognized Maloney’s unwarranted attack for what it was — a political ploy.

That should have been the end of the story, except that now the anti-gun lobby has picked up the ridiculous charges and is going after strong Second Amendment candidates who are supported by GOA.

But don’t take my word for it, here’s what the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence posted on its website (and notice the creative use of quotation marks — or the lack thereof in strategic parts — which I’ll explain below):

Dear Senator Knight,

As a California Senator, you understand that there are times when you will disagree with your colleagues about important issues and legislation. But there should never be a time when those disagreements lead to threats and/or violence.

Unfortunately, one of your donors, Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America (GOA), does not feel the same.

In March 2014, upon learning that Rep. Carolyn Maloney and other Members of Congress feared that GOA members might feel compelled to shoot them if they voted for gun reform, Pratt stated, “You know, I’m kind of glad that’s in the back of their minds.”

Then, on July 23rd, Pratt posted “An Open Letter to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney” on GOA’s website. In that letter, Pratt threatened:

“Should you attempt to disarm Americans the way the British crown tried 240 years ago, the same sovereign people who constituted this government using the cartridge box someday may need to reconstitute it, as clearly anticipated by the Declaration of Independence.”

Senator Knight, as someone who spent 18 years enforcing the law with the Los Angeles Police Department, you should be the first to reject this type of treason and vigilantism. Americans hold different, and passionate, views on the gun issue. But we can express those differences—and debate them—without threatening one another. Larry Pratt has obviously crossed a line in suggesting his members might shoot a Congresswoman who votes in a way they believe is unconstitutional. By continuing to accept money from GOA you are sending a dangerous message that you, too, share this radical view.

Please return the $4,994 that Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America (GOA) gave you during the current election cycle.

First, much of what Horwitz deems as threatening was not placed in quotes, because those were not words used by Pratt.

Pratt talked about the right to keep and bear arms as being the final defense against tyranny — he did not say it was the remedy for a crazed individual who is upset with how their legislators voted.

Secondly, Horwitz wants to ignore that everything Mr. Pratt did say was actually consistent with what the Founding Fathers believed.

So Horwitz, who is out-of-step with our history, resorts to putting words in Pratt’s mouth because he wants to silence GOA’s voice — and yours.  But that’s not going to happen.

GOA is on the counter-offensive and continues to speak the truth about the meaning of the Second Amendment.  And the candidates GOA supports will stand strong in defense of your gun rights — which is why we supported them in the first place.

Will you help us spread this pro-gun message to even more gun owners?  We need to reach out to Second Amendment supporters in every congressional district so they will know what kind of extremism we’re facing as we head into the fall elections.

You can go here to chip in a contribution of any amount to help GOA let voters across the country know about the true pro-gun candidates for Congress.

Thousands of Gun Owners Stand and Say “I’m Larry Pratt”

Thousands of Gun Owners Stand and Say “I’m Larry Pratt”— Groundswell movement blasts Rep. Maloney for attacking Gun Owners of America

Not a GOA member yet?  Make sure to join Gun Owners of America!

In case you missed it, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) attacked your Gun Owners of America late last week.

In doing so, Maloney called for Capitol Hill law enforcement to investigate GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt for saying that the Second Amendment is “for restraining tyrannical tendencies in government … especially those in the liberal, tyrannical end of the spectrum.”

In turn, author David Codrea of the Gun Rights Examiner blasted Maloney for her ignorance of the Constitution and for spurning our founding documents. He even went so far as to say that if Maloney is going to investigate Pratt, then she’d better start investigating other gun owners, too.

Remember the ‘I’m Spartacus!’ scene from the Kubrick movie?” asked Codrea. “In this case, I’m Larry Pratt.

If the Capitol Police are going to investigate him, they’re going to have to investigate me, too, because I agree with everything he said about the Second Amendment being a last-resort protection against tyranny,” Codrea said.

Over the weekend, thousands upon thousands of gun owners joined Codrea in saying “I’m Larry Pratt,” and they called on Maloney to stop playing partisan politics.

Here are just some of the comments that were posted on GOA’s Facebook page:

* “It’s a pretty pathetic government that wants someone investigated for believing in and standing up for the Constitution!”

* “Why doesn’t Rep. Maloney have the Capitol Hill police investigate the myriad of Democrat scandals? Unless… she’s culpable.”

* “That’s the progressive left mentality for ya… ‘Hey, he believes in rights and doesn’t agree with our views — let’s send in the Gestapo to harass him.’”

* “They should also investigate George Washington, Thomas Paine, and many of the other Founding Fathers!”

Educating Rep. Maloney on the Constitution

In its official response to Rep. Maloney, GOA stated that what the Founding Fathers believed — and what they printed in the Federalist Papers — is that our freedoms which are protected by the Second Amendment are the final guarantee against a tyrannical government:

* “If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted ….” — Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 28

* “[The Constitution preserves] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation [where] the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.” — James Madison, Federalist No. 46

Gun owners know that there are many other similar type comments that were made by our Founding Fathers — from Thomas Jefferson to George Mason to Patrick Henry. Apparently, Mrs. Maloney must have skipped that civics class during high school.

The hypocrisy of Maloney and the anti-gun Left

GOA also noted that there is tremendous hypocrisy in Maloney’s latest attack against Larry Pratt, given that she completely ignores REAL examples of threatened violence by the anti-gun Left.

Can you imagine the outrage if anyone on the Right even joked about shooting the President … or ripping out the Vice-President’s heart (or his hair plugs for that matter) … or slitting a female Representative’s wrists … or putting an anti-gun Governor against the wall to face a firing squad?

All these threats were made against politicians on the Right, but after each vile utterance, Rep. Carolyn Maloney stayed silent. She uttered not a peep.

The silence is deafening!

Maloney’s double-standard

Finally, Rep. Maloney says Larry Pratt’s comments are “reprehensible in light of what happened to my good friend Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.” Well, she is right that what happened to Rep. Giffords was truly reprehensible.

But what she chose to hide from the public is that Giffords was not shot by a conservative activist, but rather by a radical who was a fan of theCommunist Manifesto and Mein Kampf.

In other words, he was hardly a right-winger.

The anti-gun Left clearly has a double standard. They excuse their own outbursts of vitriol, but then go apoplectic when the Right hearkens back to statements made by our Founding Fathers.

Today is the day! GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt plays a cameo role in a movie that opens up in selected theaters across the country.

The movie is A Long Way Off, which is a 21st century version of the Prodigal Son story.  After getting beaten up, the Prodigal goes to Larry’s Gun Store to get a gun.

Larry Pratt is one of several celebrities in the movie.

“To further attract an expanded audience,” says WorldNetDaily, the movie “effectively integrate[s] non-actors actually playing themselves, including Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America (who appeared as a guest with Piers Morgan multiple times) playing himself as an owner of Larry’s Gun Shop.”

Other celebrity “non-actors” include Sean Hannity and Scott Rasmussen.

Check and see if the movie is playing near you.

GOA tackles the Connecticut gun ban

Gun Owners of America filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in late May, challenging the draconian Connecticut gun ban.

The Connecticut law — now infamous for making criminals out of hundreds of thousands of otherwise law-abiding citizens who have refused to register their weapons — bans so-called “assault weapons” and “large capacity magazines.”

In court, the district judge bought the old, tired arguments that the ban is necessary to protect the police and further public safety. Despite finding that the ban “substantially burdened” the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, he felt the burden was not unreasonable in light of the competing public interest.

Never mind that these arguments were rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in the DC v. Heller case. As such, the district court used a judge-empowering “balancing test” to justify the ban.

But GOA’s brief argues, among other things, that the judicial standard of review for Second Amendment cases is the amendment’s text itself — “shall not be infringed.”

And please help support our efforts to continue bringing cases like this one.

Gun Owners win key victories, including one before the Supreme Court

Gun Owners win key victories, including one
before the Supreme Court

And gunnies say goodbye to a good friend

“Otis McDonald was a gracious Christian gentleman who loved his family and wanted nothing more than to keep them safe,” said GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt, who interviewed McDonald (for his NewsHour radio program) after the Supreme Court ruled in McDonald’s favor and struck down Chicago’s gun control law.

GOA won a huge victory before the Supreme Court in the McCutcheon case last week — a decision which will effectively allow GOA supporters to contribute greater total dollar amounts to help pro-gun candidates get elected.

One of the arguments that Gun Owners of America made in its amicus brief was that the Court should not trust Congress to regulate elections — a point that was echoed by Chief Justice John Roberts on page 3 of the McCutcheondecision:  “And those who govern should be the last people to help decide whoshould govern.”

GOA is also thankful for Justice Clarence Thomas, whose opinion most closely resembled the arguments made in GOA’s brief.

While Justice Thomas concurred in the majority decision, he also issued his own opinion, saying he would have gone further to overturn all contribution limits — something that Justice Thomas has urged for years, and something that GOA’s brief urged, as well.

GOA helping states block federal gun laws

Gun Owners of America recently thanked its Idaho members for their activism in helping their state become the latest to nullify President Obama’s gun control agenda.

GOA issued several alerts into the state in favor of the nullification bill, and GOA activists rose to the occasion.

After Governor Butch Otter (R) signed the bill into law in late March, GOA issued a statement to the media congratulating residents of the Gem State.

“By signing this nullification bill into law,” said GOA’s Director of Communications Erich Pratt, “Idaho has joined an elite class of states that are telling the feds to ‘get lost’ — especially when it comes to unconstitutional gun control infringements.”

The new law will bar Idaho officials from enforcing federal gun control laws, and the law will penalize officers who give such orders.

“Almost a dozen states have introduced similar bills this year,” Pratt said.  “And Alaska and Kansas enacted their own nullification bills last year.”

Gun owners smack down Bloomberg gun control in New Hampshire

It has been a long, hard battle in the Granite State, but the self-proclaimed nation’s Mayor — the anti-gun Michael Bloomberg — has come up empty-handed.

The former New York City Mayor is spending millions of dollars all over the country in an effort to expand background checks to prevent more and more law-abiding citizens from owning guns.

In New Hampshire, Senate Bill 244 was introduced with this end in mind by an anti-gun Democrat.  As introduced, the bill would have imposed gun bans on large classes of Granite Staters.

This ban could have covered police and firemen with PTSD; or seniors with Alzheimer’s, many of whom have very large and valuable gun collections which they would like to pass on to their children.

GOA worked with the New Hampshire Firearms Coalition in the state to get the onerous provisions stripped out of the bill.  After a long hard battle — where some weak-kneed gun groups in the state even supported gun control “lite” as an alternative — the state Senate did the right thing and stripped out every word of gun control.

The legislature is still in session, and thus, it “ain’t over till the fat lady sings.”  But this is a big victory for the Second Amendment in New Hampshire, and another huge defeat for the Bloomberg agenda nationwide.

Saying goodbye to Otis McDonald

Finally, we report, with great sadness, that Otis McDonald — a recent icon in the gun movement — died last Friday, April 4.

Gun owners will remember him as the valiant resident of Chicago who brought down the city’s handgun ban — a case which was finally decided in 2010 by the U.S. Supreme Court in the now famous McDonald v. Chicago.

GOA Executive Director interviewed him for his radio program and later appeared with him on the Judge Jeanine Pirro show on Fox News last year.

McDonald died last week at the age of 80 after a long illness.

“While Otis is no longer with us, his legacy will continue on for years,” Pratt said.  “Otis McDonald will truly be missed.”

GOA: Police Drop the Charges Against Jared Marcum!

Police Drop the Charges Against Jared Marcum!

These and other victories remind us, once again,
there’s much to be grateful for this Independence Day

“I can’t thank Larry Pratt and Gun Owners enough for standing with Jared and his family during these difficult days.  You were there when we needed you.  GOA and GOF’s legal and financial support was critical to Jared’s defense, to blocking the gag order which the government asked for, and finally obtaining a dismissal of all charges against Jared.  Thank you for all you do and thanks for the GOA T-shirts!” — Ben White, attorney for Jared Marcum

Gun Owners of America wants to thank all of you who contributed to the Jared Marcum legal defense fund.

All charges have now been dropped against the West Virginia teenager, and Jared will not have a criminal record.

In April, the 14-year-old was ordered by a band teacher to change his T-shirt because the instructor did not like the shirt’s pro-gun message.  The shirt stated “protect your right” and pictured a rifle with a scope.

Jared was suspended from school, and later was arrested for “obstructing” an officer.  He faced a $500 fine and one year in jail.

The police then issued a gag order against the family and his attorney, preventing them from talking about the case.  And as if that wasn’t Orwellian enough, a reporter who tried to contest the gag order found herself being ejected from the courthouse.  The reason?

If you guessed “obstruction,” then you move to the head of the class!

All of this heavy-handedness on part of the police led Kurt Hofmann of the Examiner to say, “The Logan, West Virginia PD apparently has the most easily ‘obstructed’ police officers since the Keystone Cops.”

In the midst of all this, GOA helped ignite a national outrage after alerting activists two weeks ago to what was happening in the Mountain State.

Plus, Gun Owners Foundation quickly set up a legal defense fund to assist the attorney who was taking Jared’s case pro bono.

Thankfully, the case is now over, as the police dropped all charges against Jared Marcum on Thursday.

With this victory behind them, the Marcum family is now considering legal action against the school district.  GOA will be watching these efforts closely and will keep you updated.

In similar news, GOA is working with a Congressman in Washington to cut-off federal funds to any school district that imposes a zero-tolerance policy that punishes (e.g., suspends) children for wearing shirts containing a pro-gun message … or for playing cops-and-robbers during recess … or for turning their pop tarts into “weapons” … or extending their fingers to resemble a gun, etc.

Please stay tuned.

GOA wins initial victory on behalf of pro-gun sheriff

Gun Owners of America also won an initial skirmish in Wisconsin, where a sheriff has come under attack for his pro-gun views.

If you’ve heard the name David Clarke, you know that he is one of the most pro-gun sheriffs in the country.

Last month, GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt personally awarded the “High Noon Award” to Wisconsin’s Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke, Jr., for “standing for truth when others run, for telling the truth even though politically incorrect.”

In a public safety announcement earlier this year, Sheriff Clarke told viewers:  “With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed or you can fight back. But are you prepared?”

The ad ends with Clarke stating, “You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We’re partners now. Can I count on you?”

Well, a panel on the Milwaukee Board of Supervisors tried to discriminate against Sheriff Clarke and punish him for his pro-gun views.  The committee did so by voting to restrict Sheriff David Clarke from appearing in any future public service announcements.

For the record, David Clarke has made several public service announcements, but they were never a problem until he cut the “pro-gun” advertisement.

Recognizing this for the sheer discrimination it is, Gun Owners of America immediately activated its grassroots network within the state and asked them to contact all the Board of Supervisors.

According to several media outlets, the GOA alert resulted in the Board being “flooded” and “inundated” with emails supporting Sheriff Clarke.

When politicians feel the heat … they see the light.

The full Board of Supervisors looked into the situation and sent the “gag order” resolution back to the committee.  So while it’s bottled up there for now, it means Sheriff Clarke is free to continue educating the public on their rights and responsibilities relating to self-defense.

Help celebrate Independence Day — and our recent victories — with a gift membership to GOA

You activism has helped us achieve tremendous victories this year.

In addition to the victories mentioned above, we were able to pull off one of the biggest activism coups in recent memory.

Don’t forget that seven months ago, after the Sandy Hook tragedy, the entire nation thought that new gun control restrictions were a foregone conclusion.  But you showed them that gun owners are passionate about their constitutional rights and that they are willing to make their voices heard!

As a result, we killed gun control in the Senate, and our Second Amendment rights were not infringed.

The Constitution — and the Declaration of Independence — are two of the greatest documents ever produced by man.  But as you know, they are under relentless attack today.

With your help, however, we will continue to defend the “unalienable rights” endowed by our Creator and the protections that were passed down to us from our Founding Fathers.  In the Declaration, they clearly indicated their “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,” and 237 years later, we find ourselves doing the same to defend our gun rights.

Hence, it’s timely that we will be celebrating Independence Day in a few days.  In addition to the ways you may choose to celebrate, there’s one more that we would ask you to consider.

And that is to give your pro-gun family and friends a gift membership with Gun Owners of America.

When you do, you increase the voice of the most active grassroots gun lobby that is constantly on the front lines defending your rights.

The more activists who, like you, send their e-mails and postcards to their legislators … the louder your voice becomes in the halls of Congress.

To give a gift membership in Gun Owners of America, simply click on this link.

Once you click on the above link, fill in the information for your family members or friends.  You can then print out a Gift Certificate which you can present to the recipients of your generosity.

Thank you!
