Win For Minnesota Gun Owners!!

You did it!

Your calls, emails, and attendance at the hearings told our legislators that we won’t stand for any more infringements — and they listened. Today, Minnesota House Speaker Paul Thissen announced that the House would not be hearing any gun control bills this session.

No “assault weapon” bans.

No magazine bans.

No universal registration.

No confiscation.

GOCRA supporters flood the capitol for hearingsAs we told the Pioneer Press last night:

Andrew Rothman, vice president of the Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance, said critics like to point to the National Rifle Association as the “500-pound-gorilla” because the organization can send in professional lobbyists.
But it’s local grass-roots groups like his — where the power is people, not money — that make an impact, he said.
“Day to day, week to week, year to year, it’s the locals making those one-to-one contacts with legislators and our volunteer lobbyists who spend time at the Capitol for 25 years that make that difference. You don’t have to like us or agree with us to trust us, but we have that track record,” Rothman said. “By far, we saw that in the hearings in February and March, when the gun rights supporters outnumbered the gun banners 10 or 20 to one. That wasn’t an accident. It was because our people care. And there are a lot of us. And those who are out to restrict rights of others are in a tiny, tiny minority.”

The Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance has no paid staffers. Since 1989, the group has relied on volunteers and donations from Minnesota residents to get the word out, Rothman said. And their voices are being heard loud and clear.

What’s Next?

Don’t sit back and relax quite yet! While gun control is dead this session in Minnesota, in Washington, D.C., it’s still on the table.

  1. Call and email Senator Franken, Senator Klobuchar, and your Congressman or Congresswoman (see the end of this email for phone numbers and email links). Tell them that Minnesotans have shown how they feel about having their rights threatened. Tell them that as a constituent, you expect them to respect the Second Amendment.
  2. Call or email Rep. Tony CornishRep. Debra Hilstrom, and Sen. Julianne Ortman and thank them for their strong, principled leadership in defense of our rights this session. If your own reps served you well, let them know. If they didn’t, let them know that, too!
  3. If you haven’t yet signed up for a GOCRA membership, we hope you will. The next fight is always just around the corner.

Thank you for being a part of our winning team!

Off the Table!

Universal background checks taken off the table in Minn. House

GOOD!!! Whole damn process is unconstitutional and I want to know where the hell

Paymar…Oops Wrong picture!!

There we go..Gets his polling data from. I never nor do I know anyone was polled on this. 70%? I say BULLSHIT!!

And what the hell do these pastors think protects their 1st Amendment Rights? Or are they like one former pastor, well still a pastor, just not where I am at anymore, thinks huddling and praying will take care of all?

A number of pastors A number of pastors during Tuesday’s hearing, leading to an interesting exchange on scripture from Republican Rep. Tony Cornish, a strong gun rights supporter.

“What do you think Jesus meant in Luke in the New Testament when he said, ‘Sell your cloak and buy a sword‘?” Cornish queried. “The reason I ask is that we always get pastors coming up here and playing the moral card on us and saying we have to pass a bill when I think that Jesus would have been plenty in support of protecting his family from violence if he had to.”

Legislative update: good bill, bad bill, make the calls!

We know you’re busy, so here’s the short version:

We’re about to turn around this session’s gun control around 180 degrees – but we need your help!

Good bill, bad bill

  • Gun banners have announced a new rights-stripping omnibus bill (HF237).
  • A bipartisan coalition of gun rights supporters have a alternate bill that punishes criminals, not you. They’ll be announcing it tomorrow (Wednesday, March 6).

What you can do

  • Call and email your elected officials (see the end of this email for their contact info) and tell them to SAY NO to the Paymar bill (HF237) and SAY YES to the GOCRA-approved alternate bill.
  • Call and email the House Public Safety committee (see below) and tell them to SAY NO to the Paymar bill (HF237) and SAY YES to the GOCRA-approved alternate bill.
  • Call and email the Senate Republican leadership team (see below), and tell them that we need a companion bill in the Senate right away.

Rep. Michael Paymar

House Public Safety Committee

Let’s show Rep. Paymar’s that Minnesotans oppose his assault on our rights by defeating his bill in his own committee. Ask them to SAY NO to the Paymar bill (HF237) and SAY YES to the GOCRA-approved alternate bill.

Representative Michael Paymar (DFL) – Chairman
E-mail: rep.michael.paymar
You can suggest that Rep. Paymar simply scrap his bill and sign on to the alternate bill.

Representative Paul Rosenthal (DFL) – Vice Chairman
E-mail: rep.paul.rosenthal
Rep. Rosenthal authored HF294, which would gut the civil rights protections of Minnesota‘s Permit to Carry Law by allowing sheriffs to deny permits on the weakest of grounds. Tell him he should be working to punish criminals, not law-abiding citizens.

Representative Tony Cornish (R) – Republican Lead
E-mail: rep.tony.cornish
Give Rep. Cornish a big THANK YOU for his strong support of your rights!

Representative Debra Hilstrom (DFL)
E-mail: rep.debra.hilstrom
Thank Rep. Hilstrom for her strong rejection of registration schemes, as well as magazine and rifle bans, and thank her for supporting the alternate bill. (One newspaper has reported that she will be the alternate bill’s chief author!)

Representative Brian Johnson (R)
E-mail: rep.brian.johnson
Rep. Johnson is new at the legislature this year, and will be under a lot of pressure to cave to gun control. Tell him to stand firm for our rights.

Representative Tim Kelly (R)
E-mail: rep.tim.kelly
Thank Rep. Kelly for his consistent votes for gun rights.

Rep. Andrea Keiffer

Representative Andrea Kieffer (R)
E-mail: rep.andrea.kieffer
Rep. Kieffer has been a strong voice in the fight for your rights, and deserves your thanks.

Representative John Lesch (DFL)
E-mail: rep.john.lesch
Remind Rep. Lesch that “equal protection” means just that — city folks have the same civil rights as country folks.

Representative Kathy Lohmer (R)
E-mail: rep.kathy.lohmer
Please thank Rep. Lohmer for her strong support of your rights!

Representative Joe Mullery (DFL)
E-mail: rep.joe.mullery
Rep. Mullery has been an opponent of gun rights for a long time. Remind him that if we work together, we can improve mental health and conviction reporting, and make our existing laws work better.

REp. Jim Newberger

Representative Jim Newberger (R)
E-mail: rep.jim.newberger
Rep. Newberger is a strong supporter of your gun rights. Thank him for staying strong.

Representative Shannon Savick (DFL)
E-mail: rep.shannon.savick
Rep. Savick is a rural DFLer who needs to be reminded that her constituents will not tolerate new gun control.

Rep. Dan Schoen

Representative Dan Schoen (DFL)
E-mail: rep.dan.schoen
Remind Rep. Schoen that as a police officer, he knows who the real bad guys are: they’re not the law-abiding Minnesota gun owners, and they won’t follow new gun control laws any more than they follow the existing ones.

Representative Steve Simon (DFL)
E-mail: rep.steve.simon
Rep. Simon is a smart, principled lawyer: he knows that the Supreme Court has affirmed the right to keep and bear arms as an individual right. He also knows that stripping due processdoesn’t make us more free or more safe. But you can remind him anyway!

Representative Erik Simonson (DFL)
E-mail: rep.erik.simonson
Rep. Simonson is a new representative. Remind him that gun control is DFL Kryptonite: it has cost the House its DFL majority before, and it will again.

Representative Linda Slocum (DFL)
E-mail: rep.linda.slocum
Representative Slocum is a co-author on several gun control bills this session. Tell her that focusing on the bad guys, not law-abiding gun owners, is the place to start.

Representative Mark Uglem (R)
E-mail: rep.mark.uglem
Remind Rep. Uglem that the Second Amendment is not about hunting — it is a fundamental human, civil and Constitutional right, worthy of the strongest protection.

Representative John Ward (DFL)
E-mail: rep.john.ward
Thank Rep. Ward for his past support of your gun rights and encourage him to continue to do so.

By those evil Gun Rights Activist!!!

GUN LAW HEARINGS: Overflowing crowd at Minnesota Capitol – KMSP-TV

A huge crowd gathered outside the House hearing room, forcing some spectators into an overflow room and filling the basement. Gun rights supporters packed every available seat in three separate rooms.

Oh yeah!!

“I look at this and I see an egregious, an egregious attack on the Second Amendment.” – Rep. Jim Newberger (R-Becker), a paramedic, speaking about a proposed bill on tighter gun background checks

“If we want to arm teachers, if we want to have armed security guards, if we want to put shooters at the scene who can actually do something, Legislatures are saying ‘no’ and pretending these worthless gun bills are going to do any good — which they won’t,” said Republican Rep. Tony Cornish, of Good Thunder.

Looks like they woke some folks up with their antics..
